Festival of competition for seedless persimmon evaluation in Bac Kan(06/10/2009)
Bac Kan is a famous northern upland province for fruit-trees like orange, mandarin (Quang Thuan), peach, pear (Ngan Son), orange apricot (Bach Thong), and especially seedless persimmon (mainly grown in Cho Don, Ba Be, Ngan Son). This fruit has helped Bac Kan farmer with life stabilization together with Hunger Eradication and Poverty Reduction. Persimmon is the fruit not only creates jobs for the local people but has also been regarded as the high economic value specialty tree in Bac Kan.
On Sep 25th 2009, with support from VOICE program, Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Bac Kan together with CASRAD held a festival of competition for seedless persimmon evaluation in Bac Kan. Delegates include representative from Division of Environmental Science and Technology; CASRAD; Department of Intellectual Property, Ministry of Science and Technology, private traders, club of women consumer and family households in Cho Don, Ba Be, Ngan Son. Board of evaluators involve scientist from universities, professional institutes, managers, consumers and local producers. By sense of taste, 15 models of seedless persimmon, which are selected from best local permission trees, have been highly appraised, especially for its scent, crispiness, sweet and good shape.
Mr Luu Duc Thanh, Department of Intellectual Property stated “Once product gets PGI (The protected geographical indication), it will gain a number of advantages such as label, price and quality insurance. Seedless persimmon quality is certainly able to obtain PGI”.
Within the researh “Building PGI for Bac Kan persimmon”, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development gives
Department of Intellectual Property, CASRAD will directly discuss with Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Division of Environmental Science and Technology Bac Kan about PGI procedure for persimmon in 2010. It is important to maintain the product’s advantages and level up its economical benefit for farmers. Department of Agriculture and Rural Development needs to find head plants and the compatible planting land to expand and improve persimmon quality.
