Phuc Trach Pomelo has gained scientific bases for the protected geographical indication (PGI)(21/09/2009)

The protected geographical indication (PGI) is ensuring typical products engaged to ecological zones not only in order to take ecological, indigenous understanding advantages; increase the value of speciality on the market but also to conserve and improve biodiversity.

To meet the requirements for PGI, it is necessary to conduct research providing scientific bases on particular quality of the products, relation between the special quality with geographical and human factor, point out the protected regions.

Phuc Trach Pomelo is a well-known high quality product of Huong Khe – Ha Tinh. In 2008, to uphold this reputation, with the financial support from Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, together with Department of Science and Technology Ha Tinh, CASRAD has conducted the research “ Completing Scientific bases and registration principles for PGI of Ha Tinh Phuc Trach Pomelo”

With interdisciplinary experienced researchers, the study has collected historical documentation and evaluation of commodity chain to conclusively prove the reputation of the product. By variety of research methodology, the groups has already drawn out typical characteristics such as shape, color, settling and biochemical, relation between quality and geographical factors.

The planting area is situated in hollow topography surrounded by Truong Son mountain range in the West and Tra Son in the East. This brings an outstanding climate condition to the Huong Khe pomelo region.
Growing and accumulating fruit months require high temperature, dry condition and less Laos wind corruption intervention with low speed. Ngan Sau river is the main flow along Huong Khe 110km, upstream; Huong Trach commune - phosphoric mine is the place giving the best quality of pomelo. Topography, rivers and streams and the origin of soil foundation are characteristic features of the Huong Khe pomelo planting land.
Agro-chemistry quota indicators as absorbable Mn2+, , Ca2+, K20 total has close connection to the product’s quality. The PGI region is localized with the total area 2416,8ha, including 18 communes in Huong Khe, Ha Tinh.

The research has been checked and approved, scientific council highly appreciated its result. Registration profile Phuc Trach PGI in Huong Khe, Ha Tinh has also furnished. The required criteria obtain the National Office of Intellectual Property approval. Phuc Trach Pomelo in Huong Khe, Ha Tinh has gained bases for PGI.
